Possible magazine photographs

This doesn't work very well for a front cover as he is not looking into the camera. However this could make a good contents page image as it is good quality with a plain background.

This is a good image to use for the front cover as he is looking into the camera with a fairly blank expression or even slightly angry looking. This and the black clothing reflects the genre well.

This would make a good double page spread due to the background and the pose of the subject. He is also dressed appropriately for this genre.

Magazine photographs

This photograph would not be very effective as a front cover due to him looking away from the camera.

The expression on his face is not very effective as he is smirking slightly which does not reflect the genre.

This photograph would not work effectively as the subject is laughing which is not conventional as a front cover in this genre.

The expression on his face doesn't work very well for a front cover as he is smiling which is not very conventional inn this genre of music magazine.

This could work as a double page spread due to the subject being located to the side of the frame.

Two shot (medium close-up)

Bad lighting as it is far too bright and yellow

Bad lighting as it is too dark on one side making a very strong shadow

Focus group research

Social class and demographics

Definition
Demographics are the measurable characteristics of media consumers such as age, gender, race, education and income level.

My magazines demographics
My magazine will be aimed at class B as it has a similar target audience to MOJO and UNCUT a higher paid audience because they have a high price of £4.60. However, the reader profiles of these magazines show a very high percentage of the magazines readership is of 15-24 year old therefore students will also be targeted. the price of my magazine will be slightly lower than the likes of MOJO and UNCUT as there is a high interest from 15-24 year old in this style of magazine/genre, this was shown through my focus group as they would spend around £3 but would pay around £5 if it included a CD.
This focus group research has made me re-think the price of the magazine and also the colour scheme as darker colours are proving to attract people to the genre of Rock.
I generally discovered that artists of these genres are not very well known to the wide audience due to the fact that many are 'old' or no longer together and no longer meet popular culture of today. this shows that this magazine will have a fairly niche audience.
My magazine will have around 130 pages because it is similar to MOJO and shares a similar target audience and social class.

Genre outfit 3

Denim is very commonly worn in my chosen genre of music. The addition of patches is also very iconic of the rock genre and often 'double denim' was very normal.

Genre outfit 2

Oversized and tatty clothes are very normal within this genre, as are converse and boots. Large overshirts are also iconic of the rock genre.

Colour scheme ideas

These colours are not very bright which reflects the rock, punk and blues genre. I have repeatedly used either a black or grey in each scheme due to the darkness to this genre rather than the happy colourful pop genre.

Audience research questions

  • What price are you willing to pay for a magazine?
  • Would an added CD change this price?
  • Is the name RPB (rock, punk, blues) a good name for the genre? Why?
  • What artist would you want to see in this magazine?
  • What artists do you think of in the Rock genre?
  • What is an appropriate colour scheme relating to the genre?
  • How frequently would you like the magazine to be published?

Why audience research is important

Because...
  • It shows you what should be put in the magazine in order to attract the target audience to purchasing the magazine.
  • It helps you understand what the target audience is interested in.
